Our History

Our-History-alt

Lee’s Friends, an award-winning non-profit organization providing support for cancer patients and their families in Hampton Roads, was named for 16 year old Lee Harkins who died in 1978 of Hodgkin Lymphoma, a type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system. Prior to her diagnosis, Lee enjoyed being outdoors riding her bike or playing tennis. She especially loved swimming and canoeing during trips to her family’s log cabin in Ontario. Lee adored owls and collected them in various forms, from stuffed animals to photographs. Today, the Lee’s Friends logo includes an owl, paying homage to Lee and her love of nature. Lee attended The Williams School and Maury High School in Norfolk, and was a member of Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Lee approached her cancer with remarkable courage, humor, and determination. Even as she battled her disease, Lee constantly thought of others who did not have the same access to support or resources as she did. Before she died, Lee – alongside her parents, Emily Harkins Filer and George Harkins – established the Lee Harkins Endowment Fund to provide support to cancer patients in need. In 1979, Lee’s mother and nine family friends founded Lee’s Friends, bringing a remarkable young woman’s vision to life.

The mission of Lee’s Friends is to offer free person-to-person help and emotional, practical, and financial support to cancer patients and their families facing the crisis of living with cancer. We envision a Hampton Roads where no one battles cancer alone, fulfilling Lee’s wish to help others live with cancer. Lee’s Friends received tax exempt status as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1990.

For over four decades, Lee’s Friends has been helping people in Hampton Roads live with cancer through our core programs: transportation, emergency humanitarian grants, and emotional support. Since 2015, Lee’s Friends has provided over 15,000 rides to and from medical appointments, awarded nearly $685,000 in emergency humanitarian grants to 2,993 patients in financial crisis, and supported the emotional well-being of countless patients and their family members along their cancer journey.
Emily Harkins Filer served as Executive Director for 22 years until she retired in 2001; Emily died in 2021 at age 85. Carol Olsen, CVA, currently serves as the organization’s Executive Director.

Lee’s Friends has garnered multiple honors and awards in recognition of our service to cancer patients in Hampton Roads:
